There are just so many options out there to choose from. Our BackupGenie review will focus on this popular cloud storage solution.

BackupGenie – General Info

BackupGenie does exactly what its name might suggest. It backs up the files on your PC to the cloud. There are a lot of services out there that offer this function, but each of them differs in some key ways like the target audience (individual users or businesses) and the features offered.

BackupGenie sells itself to the individual users and small businesses primarily, and all of their plans are designed to be super easy to use even for someone who’s not that experienced with these kinds of apps or computers in general. As a result, the features offered are somewhat minimal, but by sacrificing that they gain a massive boost to usability.

Plans & Pricing

This BackupGenie review will kick off by taking a look at some of the different pricing options offered by the service and then later analyzing them compared to the competition.

Plan Price Storage Allotment Features
Free Free 1 GB Automated backups, 24/7 support, mobile access
Home/Pro $7.61/mo with 2-year subscription 75 GB Automated backups, 24/7 support, mobile access
Premium $8.19/mo with 2-year subscription 250 GB Automated backups, 24/7 support, mobile access
Ultimate $10.69/mo with 2-year subscription 1 TB Automated backups, 24/7 support, mobile access

Overall, the service is well-priced and competitive with other services. The cost is a little higher than some of the competition with a 1-year or monthly subscription though, which are more expensive than the 2-year sub.

Some extra charges will be discussed later in this BackupGenie review, and that may sway the opinion of some on the issue of price though.

BackupGenie In-Depth Review

Next, we’ll have a look at specific metrics about this cloud storage service and analyze them on their merits. This will help you to better make an informed decision about whether or not this service is right for you. We’ll be looking at the ease of backup and restoration, the security, and some features of the product.

File Backup

BackupGenie uses an automated scheduled backup system. Using their app which will have to be downloaded onto your PC, you simply choose files and folders to backup and schedule a time. BackupGenie will take care of the rest as long as you don’t forget to leave your PC on at your scheduled backup time.

The application is super easy to use, and it’s designed for people who aren’t very good with computers, so anyone with basic computer skills should be able to use it with ease.

There are no restrictions on the number of devices, so you can include your laptops and smartphones in there as well. The mobile app is similarly easy to use to back up pictures, videos, or files on your device.

File Restoration

File restoration is similarly easy. Through either their mobile or desktop apps, choose the files you want to restore and where to restore them to. From there, the application will do all the lifting. It will find and access your files on the cloud and automatically download them for you.

There’s also the option to use the stellar graphical interface to drag and drop your files from the cloud to where you want them on your PC.

Download speeds are typically really good with this service. They provide up to 200 Mbps transfers, which is more than most people’s ISP maximum download speed. So there shouldn’t be any issues.

The security features offered by BackupGenie typically meet the industry standards, but they fall short of the competition in a couple areas.

They do provide end-to-end encryption for file transfers and encrypt the data for storage with 256-bit AES encryption, which is great and now pretty standard in the industry. Business users can get access to additional tools to set permissions on a per-user basis, which is great for controlling what files specific employees can access.

Where they fall a little bit compared to some competitors is their lack of zero-knowledge security. Users cannot manage their own encryption keys with BackupGenie, but that may only be a turn off to paranoid individuals and some businesses.

Advanced/Other Features

There are a lot of additional features offered by BackupGenie. The sad thing is that where many other services would offer many of these for free, BackupGenie charges you an additional subscription fee for each of these services.

Some of the features offered are sync folders (think Dropbox), priority support, network drives, external hard drive backup, max file size upgrades, hourly backups, and a recycle bin.

Some of these features, especially network drive and “recycle bin” support, are typically offered for free by other competitors. It’s a little disappointing that you have to pay for that here, but at least they are offered.

BackupGenie – Pros & Cons

Here’s a summary of the pros and cons of this service discussed in this BackupGenie review.

  • The service is easy to use and targeted at those with little experience.
  • There are a lot of extras offered like support for network and external drives.
  • Automatic backups make this a truly set it and forget it model.

  • Extra services are charged, unlike some other competitors.
  • You cannot manage your own encryption keys.

BackupGenie Alternative Options

Backblaze comes in a lot cheaper at $5/month. However, additional computers will cost an extra $5. But you get unlimited storage for that price and many of the same features as BackupGenie. For those with one or 2 devices to back up, this option may be strictly better. The only downside is slightly slow upload speeds.

CrashPlan is one of the cloud backup juggernauts, and it’s well deserving of that title. It comes in a little more expensive but plans cap out at $13.99/month for up to 20 devices with unlimited storage.

For those looking for better security, SpiderOak does that well. They offer zero-knowledge encryption where you manage your own encryption keys. They are a bit pricey, but they allow unlimited devices in their plans.

Our Verdict

Overall, BackupGenie is a fine cloud storage solution that meets the industry standards. It’s well suitable for individuals and small businesses. Its easy-to-use interface will be appealing to many, and it’s indeed a strong selling point.

As mentioned earlier in this BackupGenie review, those looking for advanced features, lots of devices or connected drives, or higher security would be better served elsewhere. But those looking for simple will find it here.
