Rackspace Cloud Storage Service Review

Cloud storage solutions are a growing need for individuals as well as businesses. Especially in the business sector, choosing a cloud storage solution that fits your business can be a challenge. This time we’ll be doing a Rackspace review.

Rackspace is a primarily managed cloud storage solution that manages your business cloud for you for a fee. This Rackspace review will be focused on business customers since that’s the primary target of Rackspace’s offerings, so those looking for personal cloud solutions should check out one of our other great reviews.

Rackspace – General Info

Rackspace is a cloud storage solution provider that engages in multiple different avenues of services for different types of clients. Their clientele range from small business users to enterprise users primarily.

They offer dedicated private clouds built on servers in one of their six worldwide data centers, cloud storage management on an outside service (like Azure or Amazon AWS, or hybrid solutions. They also engage in offline solutions like NAS building and installation and VMWare support. Basically, they’re a replacement for hiring your own administrators, and they often come in cheaper.

Plans & Pricing

Analyzing prices is beyond the capabilities of Rackspace reviews. Rackspace does not publicly advertise prices, and the prices vary based on a lot of metrics like labor, travel costs, maintenance, and more. Depending on the specific needs of your company, your price could be drastically different than another.

On their website, they do list prices for dedicated hosting solutions, however. Those prices range from $449 – $749 per month depending on scale, and there are additional options available for which you would have to obtain a quote. In a nutshell, check out Rackspace’s site and get a quote from them to figure out the pricing.

Rackspace In-Depth Review

In this section of the Rackspace review, we will take a look at the features of Rackspace point by point, analyzing metrics like file backup, restoration, security, and advanced or other features. This will help you to make a more informed choice about whether or not this service is right for you or your business.

File Backup

With Rackspace, features depend massively on which cloud storage solution you choose and what software you choose to go with. The possibilities are endless. This can be a bit daunting for someone who isn’t very well-versed in computers and/or the cloud, but Rackspace’s amazing customer service is there to walk you through every step of the process.

If you choose the Amazon cloud option, for example, you could have a vastly different interface compared with Microsoft Azure, but in the end, the way you interact with them from your personal PCs could be similar. Their customer service team will assist you in making sure you know what you’re doing.

File Restoration

Luckily, Rackspace is a managed plan. So if there is some kind of critical data loss on the local side, their helpful customer support staff will assist you, or even do all the work for you, in making sure your files get restored back to where they need to be. You should also be instructed on how to do simple copying and restoration yourself.

That’s one of the greatest benefits of a managed cloud solution. You pay them to do all the heavy lifting for you, so you only need a low level of understanding about how everything works. It’s a great option for those without system administrators and an IT team.

Security

Security is going to be largely dependent on what type of solution you choose. Different solutions like Google Cloud, Amazon AWS, and Microsoft Azure all use different types of security for their services.

For these business-level services though, you can be sure to be getting top-of-the-line security for your sensitive data. Most plans allow you to manage user credentials and support VPNs, WAN linking, and many more features.

Security features can be discussed and configured via a Rackspace representative. There is no need to have in-depth knowledge of the plethora of options available. THat’s what you’re paying Rackspace for.

Advanced/Other Features

Rackspace offers a lot of additional optional features and add-ons for a price. They offer NAS installations to expand your local storage. They also offer firewall installation, operating system configurations, office networking, email and web hosting, VMWare or physical servers, and data analytics services.

That’s only scratching the service. If you need some hardware or cloud work done, Rackspace likely offers a solution to fit your needs. This is great since it allows you to get everything you need to be managed by one company. So if you have an issue, you always call the same guys. You don’t need to juggle a bunch of different IT guys for your setup.

Rackspace – Pros & Cons

In this section, we’ll summarize everything we discussed in this Rackspace review into a pros and cons analysis.

Pros

  • Ability to offload your cloud storage system management and avoid hiring a sys admin
  • Good price compared to doing it in-house
  • Vast offering of additional services

Cons

  • Slightly less convenient and speedy than having an in-house sys admin team

Rackspace Alternative Options

If you don’t need someone to manage your stuff for you and/or have your own system administrator, going straight to the source is going to save you a lot of money. Microsoft Azure is a great choice with its Windows compatibility and good management interface. It is a bit costly compared to other choices, however.

Cloudways is a newer managed cloud hosting provider that competes directly with services like Rackspace. Their pricing is a lot more straightforward than Rackspace, with all prices being listed on their website. But they offer far fewer options and additional add-ons. It would be good for those looking simply for managed cloud storage and nothing more.

DigitalOcean will build you your own private cloud on their servers for a reasonable monthly fee. They offer SSD-only servers for maximum performance and a choice of data centers based on where your place of business is located.

Our Verdict

Based on everything mentioned in this Rackspace review, Rackspace is a great choice for mid-sized businesses or enterprise clients looking to take advantage of cloud storage solutions without the budget or the need to hire a system administrator and IT team.

With its vast amount of additional options and help with in-office networking, it’s an excellent choice for those that need to become part of the cloud but lack the ability to manage it all themselves.
